Join us each month as we highlight our favourite restaurant of the previous month!
June saw us visit the iconic River Cafe, well known for their simple yet high quality Italian dishes with fresh, seasonal produce. Given the stance on fresh produce, this sees the menu changing daily depending on what’s available. Despite the name there is no real view of the river, unless you take a walk across the garden to peer over the wall. The real view here is the exceptional food!
The menu is split the Italian way starting with antipasti, followed by primi, secondi and dolci. A slow, shared 4 courses is our idea of dining heaven! We did have trouble deciding between dishes because everything sounded so up our street! The service was seamless and timings of the dishes worked perfectly. We spent 3 hours and a half hours here and had a total of 4 courses. A very pleasant sunny summer evening! If you’re after a quick dinner this is not the place.
Our only regret was our poor ordering of dessert. We were desperate to try the chocolate nemesis, the almond and strawberry tart and the iconic ice cream scoops. Instead we opted for tiramisu and biscuits - rogue! Just an excuse to return we say!
Reservations are highly recommended as it can be tough to get a table, we visited on a Monday evening and the restaurant was fully booked! It’s all about the terrace in summer so be sure to secure a table outside if you can.

calamari ai ferri - chargrilled squid with fresh chilli and wild rocket
ravioli - zucchini & flowers, buffalo ricotta, parmesan and butter
taglierini verde with slow-cooked middle white pork, pancetta, vermouth & sage
coscia d’angello - chargrilled leg of lamb with slow roasted datterini tomatoes
coda di rospo - cornish monkfish roasted with courgette and potatoes
espresso & trio of biscotti

A recent addition to The River Cafe is The River Cafe Cafe. A walk in cafe adjacent to the restaurant, serving a more casual menu at a fraction of the price - this is one not to miss and is on our list for the near future!
