5 Non-Ultra-Processed Snacks To Try This January
We’re not about the “new year, new me” hype, and we’re definitely not nutritionists, but we get that January is a time when many like to make small, healthier changes. So, if you’re in the mood for some snack inspiration, we’ve rounded up 5 non-ultra-processed options to try this month! These snacks focus on whole, nourishing foods that’ll leave you feeling good, inside and out.
Cucumber & Peanut Butter
Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! When 3pm rolls around, this makes the perfect light afternoon snack. Just be sure to choose clean peanut butter! Many brands contain palm oil, stabilisers, and emulsifiers which make them ultra processed. Look for peanut butter with just peanuts and salt as ingredients. Pip & Nut or Manilife are great options. These kinds of peanut butters are prone to separating so you just have to give them a good mix before using!
Edamame
A quick, easy, delicious snack has to be edamame - a great source of protein too! Just simmer in a pan for 4 minutes, or if you’re at the office, microwave them with a splash of water. Finish with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt and enjoy!
Egg, Tomato & Basil Muffins
These egg muffins are a game-changer for breakfast, mid-morning, or an afternoon pick-me-up! Loaded with healthy fats and protein from the eggs, they’re perfect for meal prep and easy to grab on the go. Just whisk up 3 eggs, toss in 4 quartered cherry tomatoes and a few chopped basil leaves, season with salt and pepper, then bake at 180°C in mini muffin trays for 20 minutes. They’re amazing fresh out of the oven but just as tasty when cold! Add sliced avocado on top for something a little extra! (Makes 12 mini muffins.)
Medjool Dates & Peanut Butter
If dates, peanut butter, and salt haven’t made it into the snack rotation yet, now’s the time! It’s like a DIY Snickers but way cleaner. Go for Medjool dates—though they’re a bit harder to find and pricier, they’re so much better. Just remove the stone, fill with a clean peanut butter, and sprinkle with a little salt. Ridiculously good! These are perfect to prep on a Sunday ready for the week ahead!
Fage Greek Yoghurt
A classic Greek yogurt that’s stood the test of time is Fage, it’s made with just milk and live active yogurt cultures. Available in 0%, 2%, and 5% fat options, it contains no added sugar and is packed with protein! We love topping Fage with a generous handful of blueberries as an after-dinner snack!
